Liverpool are almost certain to strengthen at the back this summer, and two standout names emerging from Bournemouth could be ideal fits – Dean Huijsen and Milos Kerkez.
While neither player may currently be deemed world-class, both offer profiles that fit with Liverpool’s recruitment model and long-term ambitions.
Dean Huijsen: A Star in the Making
Huijsen has been a revelation for Bournemouth this season. At just 20 years old, the Spain international has demonstrated composure beyond his years, blending technical ability with an imposing physical presence. He’s confident with the ball at his feet, strong in aerial duels and read the game well – all traits that Liverpool value highly in a centre-back.
The Reds have just extended the contract of captain Virgil van Dijk, and while Arne Slot also has Ibrahima Konate available to partner the Dutchman, he’s yet to sign a new contract. If the situation isn’t resolved, he could be moved on.
Huijsen has a £50m release clause, and the time to strike is now.
Milos Kerkez: The Robertson Successor?
Milos Kerkez has established himself as one of the best left-backs in the Premier League. At only 21, the Hungarian has proven that he can do both sides of the game, getting forward in attack and also contributing defensively. His tenacity, energy and progressive runs mirror what made Andy Robertson the player he has been for Liverpool.
With the Scot having turned 31 in March, the time to bring in a new player as competition in the short-term and an eventual successor in the long run is now. Kerkez fits the bill and would surely jump at the chance to join the Reds, and his prospective arrival could be funded in part by the sale of Kostas Tsimikas.
Why They’d Want Liverpool
The appeal of Liverpool is clear. They’re the Premier League champions and will be looking to compete on all fronts once again next season. Huijsen and Kerkez would also have the opportunity to compete in the Champions League while playing in front of one of the most passionate fanbases in world football.
Both players have already shown that the can handle the rigours of the English top flight, and they could take their respective games to the next level with the Reds. They’d develop significantly under Slot and have world-class players around them from whom to learn. A move to Anfield would also be huge for both financially.
The Transfer Picture
Liverpool buying Huijsen or Kerkez (or both) would be huge for them, and it’d also be a massive blow for Bournemouth to lose the pair. These are the kind of transfers which influence Premier League betting markets.
Both teams want to start next season stronger than they finish the current campaign, and if the Reds and the Cherries play it right, they could do just that, even if Andoni Iraola loses two of his best players.
It would likely cost in the region of £100m to prise the duo away from the Vitality Stadium, but it’s money that they could reinvest to make them stronger all round, while Liverpool get the defenders they’re looking for as they aim to defend their Premier League crown in 2025/26.
