There have been some concerning reports claiming that Liverpool’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, is steering toward a Saudi Pro League switch.

Respected Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri now reports on X (formerly Twitter) that the former Bournemouth chief is closing in on a switch to Al-Hilal.
The plan, theoretically, is to help the Reds with their upcoming summer transfer window before then putting the finishing touches on his proposed switch to the Middle East.

Can we really be expected to believe that this will still translate to a window befitting of our evident and growing needs?
Will we all be able to step back ahead of the new season and confidently claim that Andoni Iraola was handed all the tools he needed to make the best go of the 2026/27 season?
Or will he be left short and holding the can, much like his predecessor, Arne Slot, was last term?

We’re not going to sit here and pretend that our new boss has inherited a talentless, unappealing squad.
Liverpool did, after all, spend significant sums on buying proven quality with the likes of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak. Likewise, Milos Kerkez and Hugo Ekitike both look to be outstanding purchases identified by the recruitment team.
But we can’t escape the fact that more quality is needed – evidently on the right flank ahead of Mo Salah’s departure and in the holding six position.
Beyond that, we need numbers in order to satisfy the taxing demands of Iraola’s energetic, press-heavy football.
We hope Richard Hughes and Co. will be able to deliver on those fronts this summer. However, we have serious doubts about the 46-year-old’s level of commitment if he’s already in the process of negotiating his next move in football.
