Ally McCoist was gushing over a ‘brilliant’ assist by Cody Gakpo to tee up Alexander Isak to score Liverpool’s equaliser against Nottingham Forest this afternoon.
The home side were trailing to a Dan Ndoye goal at half-time but restored parity on the hour mark when the Dutchman’s pinpoint cross picked out the Reds’ record signing to finish from close range.
It gets the 26-year-old off the mark for this season, having scored just four times in 22 games in an injury-ravaged debut campaign for LFC.
McCoist lauds ‘brilliant’ assist from Gakpo to set up Isak
Speaking on co-commentary for TNT Sports (via BBC Sport), McCoist praised Isak for anticipating the ball into the box and also lauded Gakpo for the quality of the cross into his teammate.
The Scot said: “The delivery in is brilliant. Neco Williams probably goes too early. Tap-in at the back post for Alexander Isak, back on level terms. As a centre-forward, just hang about at the back post area.”

Gakpo continues his fine start to the season
Having scored in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at Newcastle last weekend, Gakpo turned provider this time around with his second goal contribution in as many games, with our number 18 enjoying a strong start to the season.
That makes it all the more baffling that, if transfer rumours are to be believed, he could be sacrificed in order to make way for another wide attacking signing off the back of Bradley Barcola’s imminent arrival from Paris Saint-Germain.
The decision to substitute him just after Forest retook the lead through a Morgan Gibbs-White penalty also seemed surprising to say the least, with Andoni Iraola turning to birthday boy Rio Ngumoha to try and produce a moment of magic to get the Reds back on level terms.
That moment eventually came from the other wide attacker in Victor Munoz with a brilliant turn to set himself before firing the ball past Matz Sels in the 82nd minute for Liverpool’s second equaliser of the afternoon.
Far too many of our attackers performed well below their best last season. At least in the first couple of games in 2026/27, there are encouraging signings of a few of them making decisive contributions in the final third of the pitch.
